THE IMPORTANCE OF THEORY IN THE "REAL WORLD"

There is a danger that social theory can seem "purely theoretical," with little or nothing to do with the so-called real world.  As you will see in this book, however, theory organizes our inquiry, tells us where to look, and helps us understand what we find.  This is just as relevant to specific, practical problems as with a generalized understanding of how society works.
