The Practice of Social Research

Chapter Nine.  Survey Research

TOPICS APPROPRIATE FOR SURVEY RESEARCH

Survey research is a popular research technique.  It involves a standardized set of questions and, usually, a sample selected from the population we are interested in studying.  The Gallup Poll, U. S. Census and political polls are examples of surveys.

Surveys are useful for both descriptive and explanatory purposes.  They are used to determine the characteristics of massive populations, and they are very commonly used to measure attitudes and opinions, giving us the term, "opinion poll."
