The Practice of Social Research

Chapter Ten.  Qualitative Field Research

TOPICS APPROPRIATE TO FIELD RESEARCH

Field research involves going out to where the action is and obvserving it in its natural setting.  Thus it's an excellent way to study events that occur in a particular place at a particular time: a riot, rally, concert, or baseball game.  It's equally appropriate for studying less dramatic events, such as conversations, taxi rides, class discussions, dating behavior, and so forth.
