August 2003

Well. . .this was a reasonably active month.  It began in Vermont, as we were winding up the summer in Woodbury.  We joined the Ryersons for a Mozart concert on the green on the 2nd and left for Anaheim the next day.  On the way out of Vermont, we took a number of detours in the southern part of the state, which augmented our Vermont 251 Project.  Of the 251 incorporated towns and cities in Vermont, we have now visited (and photographed) 202 of them.  The towns dwindle down to a precious few, and in Vermont they are all precious.

We had originally planned to reach Anaheim on the 13th, but I managed to get us there on the 9th.  My best day of driving was 742 miles.  We took a bunch of pictures but most of them are blurred because the car was moving.  Here's where we spent our nights:

    Aug 3: Newburg, NY
Aug 4: Paris, VA (with cousins John and Roma Sherman)
    Aug 5: Knoxville, TN
    Aug 6: Fort Smith, AR
    Aug 7: Albuquerque, NM
    Aug 8: Kingman, AZ

Our rush home to Anaheim was due to my needing to be in Atlanta for American Sociological Association meetings the 16th to 20th.  The meetings went well, and I was back in California just in time for the beginning of classes the last week of August.

Henry
Of course, in all this, we haven't seen Evelyn and Henry since June.  Aaron and Ara have been keeping us somewhat up to date on them, but it's not the same as being with them--something we hope to remedy shortly.  Here's what Henry looked like the end of July.

It's interesting to compare Evie and Henry at roughly the same age.  One is clearly a girl and one a boy.
